Cobweb

We kept the flowery hanging basket
on life support during summer heat
and now the cool of autumn breezes
comes our way, helping the petals
show their final fading pastel colours,
giving forth the last of this year's gifts.
From the pot down to the ground
a canny spider stretches a skein of web
crowning it with a morning dew-bedecked home,
splendid in its perfect intricacy
slanting south-west in its ideal
location, location, location,
a few but not too many visitors
providing sustenance for the watchful host
as they find their final resting place
amidst deluding gossamer threads.
Like some of us
innocent of its own talents,
it doesn't see the perfect partnership ,
that solitary existence punctuated
by savage entrapments
assisted by the anchor holding
pink petunia, white lobelia,
blue viola, creeping jenny....
