Farewells

A woman living in Darfur
waves off a heavy laden truck,
her family and friends all crammed
in amongst their few possessions.
She sees them ride into the distance
on broken roads, blood-marked,
washed in tears, they dare to hope
might see them through to safer Chad,
as since the freedom fighters came,
they've seen too many suffer death,
and now they flee in search of safety,
shelter, schooling, food and medicine,
seeking all the care they need.
Someone else in rural Wiltshire
bids goodbye to family
and moves off in their purring car,
the model one of thousands crafted
with finely honed technology,
cosseted in the smooth conveyance
not just with their favourite music
but heating, air con, satellite system,
shielded from all kinds of weather
and intrusion on the carriageway.
Leaving before the rush hour starts
they'll be home in twenty minutes.
